2001-06-05 - 9:15 p.m. I haven't written in here in a LONG time. Truth be told, I'm feeling a little down tonight. Partly let down from school ending.Even more so this year, for some reason. I really have no justification for complaining. All this empty time to fill up. I think I'm just physically and mentally tired and unable to settle down and rest. This weekend my girl and I are going to the Texas Folklife Festival. That'll be fun. There's a guy at the Institute of Texan Cultures (where the festival is) who MIGHT have done some work on the Donkey Lady (according to a prof of mine). I may try to talk to him and see if he has any information. Quote from one of my student (re what they learned about poetry this year): "What I learned about poetry is that it is all around us. We went outside to find poetry and to write poetry. We wrote our own poems and we read poems. We went to the tennis courts to write a poem. We went to different parts of the school to write in our sensory data booklets. We all had to find our creative side. Some people had to discover their poetic side .... other poems that we wrote were inspired by other poets, scenery, and ideas. We are all natural born poets. A poet who came to our school (Naomi Nye) said that we are all poets when we're little. She said that you can never start to be a poet. You are a poet since you were little because of the way we talk." The kid who wrote this spent more of his time in trouble than out of it. I was a little stunned by how much he had to say. I'm very, very tired. The city is tearing up my street and my new, temporary mailbox is up at the corner where all the young gangbangers and taggers hang out. Verona walked up with me to get my mail and they looked at us all hard. They've already tagged on the boxes. I'm so ready to move. Opal
